Sand casting (commonly known as sand molding in the industry) is a manufacturing process in which silica sand mixed with binders is formed into a sand mold cavity. Molten iron or aluminum is poured into the cavity. Once cooled, the sand mold is broken apart to take out the casting. Since the sand mold can only be used once, it is also called single-mold casting.
Complete Process Flow
1. Pattern Making: Produce a pattern with the same shape as the finished part using wood or plastic.
2. Molding: Place the pattern inside a molding flask, fill it with molding sand and compact the sand, then pull out the pattern to leave a hollow cavity.
3. Core Making: Manufacture sand cores to form inner holes and hollow structures inside the casting.
4. Mold Closing: Insert the sand core into the mold cavity and close the upper and lower flasks.
5. Melting & Pouring: Melt the metal and pour the molten metal into the sand mold.
Shakeout & Cleaning: After the metal cools, break up the sand mold, remove flash and burrs, and obtain the rough casting.
